Scapegoating Your Guilt

In line with an oft repeated historical pattern, whenever a society’s or religion’s burden of sin reaches an apogee or becomes unbearable, it seems to conveniently break out upon the heads of the Jewish people. In that way do humanity’s reprobates assuage their consciences, dumping their own guilt on others, typically blaming them for evils of which they themselves are guilty.

Taking on the role of the Accuser, they conjure up slurs on those who, notwithstanding their flaws, strive to serve the Lord God as best they know how. Whether laboring under the Law of Moses or as spiritually born again believers in Jesus, the pattern is the same. Hence today’s intensifying persecution of Jews and Christians that is spreading like wildfire in the world.

Following the scriptural pattern of “the one and the many”—in which what happens to the one happens to the many—the recipients of this tyranny are singled out for their allegiance to the true God, the One who suffered similar abuse. Did he not predict that what they did to him they would also do to them? Or that as they judged others so they themselves would be judged?

Said Stalking Wolf in the Tom Brown Jr. series, “There are doers and there are judges.” In our day, taking on the role of vampire media trolls, these “judges” spout their venom as they feast on the remains of their victims. Under the guise of exposing the “truth”—though unable themselves to discern between truth and lies—they propagate deception, thinking to do God a service.

“Satan stirreth them up, that he may lead their souls to destruction. And thus he has laid a cunning plan, thinking to destroy the work of God; but I will require this at their hands, and it shall turn to their shame and condemnation in the day of judgment. Yea, he stirreth up their hearts to anger against this work. Yea, he saith unto them: Deceive and lie in wait to catch…

“That ye may destroy; behold, this is no harm. And thus he flattereth them, and telleth them that it is no sin to lie that they may catch a man in a lie, that they may destroy him. And thus he flattereth them, and leadeth them along until he draggeth their souls down to hell; and thus he causeth them to catch themselves in their own snare.” (Doctrine & Covenants 10:22–26)

What the Jews suffered for many centuries at the hands of Christians—and are once again suffering at the hands of Muslims—is today coming full circle not only on Jews but also on Christians. Inevitably, therefore, it must come upon Latter-day Saints in order for them to be refined. If almost the very elect will be deceived, these must learn to cut through all deception.
