Question: What is the right thing to do when we encounter things being taught in church that contradict the scriptures?
Answer: Because misinterpretations of the scriptures are symptomatic of a much larger issue, church members aren’t required of God to act as “thought police” and attempt to counter every instance they hear of false ideas or misrepresentations of what the scriptures actually say.
Alma’s words about the mysteries of God apply equally as a general principle—that we should “not impart only according to the portion of his word which he doth grant unto the children of men, according to the heed and diligence which they give unto him” (Alma 12:9).
Such would require a judgment call to determine (1) whether a misguided person would be open to correction; (2) whether this would or would not be a good time to discuss it; or, (3) whether this might be an opportunity to delve into deeper levels of what a scripture is saying.
