Does God Let Prophets Lead People Astray?

Question: I have always wanted to follow the prophet but I’m having difficulty doing so recently. My friends say the prophet will never lead people astray because if he did the Lord would take him away. Is this true?
Answer: The beliefs that we should follow a prophet and that a prophet of God won’t lead people astray are not scriptural. On the contrary, the scriptures teach that we should follow Jesus Christ, not a man. If we don’t, we may get embroiled in keeping a lesser law. As the times we live in are characterized by deception and life-threatening situations, these are divinely calculated to weed out the foolish virgins who are deceived from the wise who know Jesus.
As we are meant to act and not be acted upon, it is for us to deal personally with challenges. If not, how shall we ascend above a terrestrial glory? Many scriptural precedents and prophecies exist of political and ecclesiastical leaders’ leading people astray in times of wickedness. Typical of this are Jesus’ day and the time before his second coming. Jesus has a personalized answer to our challenges in every situation. Why not trust in it and go forward in faith?

How do you account for Doctrine and Covenants 1: “14 And the aarm of the Lord shall be revealed; and the bdaycometh that they who will not chear the voice of the Lord, neither the voice of his dservants, neither give eheed to the words of the prophets and fapostles, shall be gcut off from among the people;” I have always been taught to “follow the prophet”…there is even a primary song to this effect.
There are so many “societal splinters” today that seem essential to our lives but have nothing to do with the kingdom of God. This makes the critical thinking and reasoning difficult and perhaps impossible. When ones paradigm has included non-spiritual aspects as a necessary part of the decision making process the evil one has blinded them and accomplished his designs on the souls of the children of men, and their critical thinking ability is doomed from the outset of any analytically correct spiritual thinking relating to right thinking and comprehending the light.
Darkness then reigns in the minds of those who believe they are following the light. This is especially dangerous when it involves the saints of God, from the least to the greatest among them. It is so cunningly subtle that even the very elect as it has been stated may fall prey unnoticed.
The “kingdom of the flesh” meaning all the different aspects of daily living have mostly and widely now been influenced and infiltrated by the spirit of the evil one who seeks to take away light and truth and lead all people to destruction. Even in what once may have been considered the most honorable and respected professions, institutions and careers are now but a dim shadow of what they once were.
And unless one is truly “wise as a serpent” and “harmless as a dove” and in this case perhaps weighing in more like the serpent, being “street smart” with a highly developed spiritual propensity, you wouldn’t even notice the evil one is mired in and with which one has now become a part of and even promoter of. No one is immune and only those with the spiritual insight and sagacity will remove themselves from being a partaken of the evil that society on all levels and in every aspect are partaking.
And as Isaiah states even knowing this “report” will be a burden to those not partaking in it. Truly a “Bizarre” but necessary work in preparation to the Saviors return. At least it won’t be totally like the days of Noah. But I’m sure there were a lot of “stake presidents” and church hierarchy that didn’t get on the boat in those days.
